Can you actually say Amarillo without singing George Strait's Amarillo by Morning?

I mentioned in my last post that we made a one-night stop in Wichita Falls. I wasn't even gonna bother writing about that stop, but I gotta say a couple things. Crossroads Luxury RV Resort is nice. All grass and concrete. No gravel or dirt. Fishing pond, pool, pickle ball, etc. Bar on-site and easy access on/off the highway. But the coolest part was the overly accommodating staff. They escorted us to our site, and offered us free beers when we arrived. Once we settled in, I realized that we had no milk. I really wanted a bowl of cereal, so I called the office to see if they sold milk. They said no, but they insisted on running to the store for me. I told them that wasn't necessary but they insisted. Literally five minutes later they showed up at our site with milk and refused to let me pay for it. Very impressive!

We spent the night and didn't even bother to unhook the car. The next morning, we drove 216 miles east on I40 and we were in Amarillo before noon. Technically still morning. 😁

Amarillo was a surprise to us. Certainly bigger than we expected. Well over 200,000 residents and experiencing rapid growth. They even have some culture with a symphony and ballet. Now...it's still Texas, and Big Texan RV Ranch was exactly as depicted when we booked it. It's unique, as you'll see in the pictures. The "Ranch" is well maintained with level sites and full hook-ups. Heated indoor pool and a general store with free bagels, cream cheese, and coffee every morning. You can stay in your RV, one of the cabins, or even a covered wagon with heat and AC. Just check out the pictures and you'll get the idea.

Directly outside the entrance is Slug Bug Ranch. It's definitely unique! Basically old VW bugs and limos that have been buried nose up and spray painted by visitors. You can bring your own paint or purchase it from them. Then spray away if you want. Cadillac Ranch (same concept but with Cadillacs) is more well known, but we were more impressed with Slug Bug Ranch. Touristy? Yes. Fun for all ages? Yes. Would I go out of my way to see them? No. But it was cool since we were here anyways.

A mile down the road is Big Texan Steak Ranch. Home of the FREE 72 oz steak. Well...it's free if you can eat the entire steak, baked potato, three jumbo shrimp, a salad and role in less than one hour. šŸ¤”šŸ¤® Otherwise, it's $72. They actually have a stage for anyone that wants to accept the challenge, and other patrons can cheer them on. We went for dinner on Tuesday night and the place was packed. We saw two contestants. One tapped out while we were there and the other was still eating when we left. Obviously we had no interest in 72 ounces of meat so we shared a 20 ounce T-Bone.

Fun and Funky stay in Amarillo. We enjoyed the two days that we were there, but that was our last stop in Texas. Then it was back on I40 for almost 300 miles to Santa Fe, NM. We settled in to Santa Fe Skies RV Park and Melissa flew home for a few days for Macy's (our future daughter-in-law) bridal shower. If you've been following along, you know that when it's just the dogs and me, you never know what might happen. 🤣

I have a feeling we may be changing up our itinerary some when Melissa gets back. Santa Fe is about 50 shades of brown and this RV Park has a lot of dirt. Neither of those is my favorite so we'll probably see some things in Santa Fe and move on.

Stay tuned and enjoy the weekend!

Wow......winding down on the last legs of the almost a year travels! You guys are amazing and what experiences you've had. Did I count around 70 legs and stops throughout the U.S.A. and Canada?

Anyway glad you picked a 20 Oz. Steak to split. A much better culinary choice versus the glutinous choice of the ol 76er!

See ya in Indio(the best stop of them all!) and soooo close to the finish line!

I’ve been to Amarillo and since you didn’t mention it you must have been up wind. With certain winds it has the overwhelming smell of what cows doo. Big Texan is awesome, I saw a guy TRY to eat that giant steak, he couldn’t do half of it.

That steak is so big that it hangs over the sides of the plate. And you gotta do the shrimp, potato, salad and role as well. I couldn't eat 20% of that meal. There's a video on their website of a girl that weighs 125 pounds and finishes everything in 40 minutes. Crazy!
